Kevin C. Chung, M.D, M.S.

Dr. Chung, a professor of surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School, specializes in hand surgery and provides care as part of the Hand Program, the Pediatric Brachial Plexus Program and the Plastic Surgery Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program. He joined the faculty in 1995, and was appointed Assistant Dean for Instructional Faculty in August 2008.

He earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine and a masters of science from the U-M School of Public Health. He obtained his general surgery training from the University of Texas in San Antonio and completed fellowships in plastic surgery at the U-M and in hand surgery at the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore.

Dr. Chung’s research has focused on epidemiology studies and clinical trials to derive the best evidence for treatment of upper extremity conditions. He has received several grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) including a RO 1 grant to conduct a multi-center clinical study on outcomes of joint replacement surgery on the rheumatoid hand, a K24 Mid-Career Investigator Award on evidence-based research in hand surgery, and a R21 innovation grant to study the epidemiology of distal radius fractures. He has served on numerous NIH grant review panels for programmatic and training grants regarding rheumatoid arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions.

During his research as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at U-M, from 1995-1997, Dr. Chung developed the Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire, which is widely used around the world for measuring outcomes after hand surgery.

His enthusiasm for educating others led him to Vietnam in 2005 and 2006, where he taught pediatric hand and burn surgery at a leading children’s hospital in Saigon. His trip was part of the Medical School’s Global REACH academic initiative. He has served as a medical educator in South America, Africa and plans a return to Asia to Aksu in Xinjiang, the western part of China.
