James W. Albers, M.D., Ph.D.

James W. Albers, M.D., Ph.D., serves as assistant dean for the instructional faculty at the University of Michigan Medical School, where he is a professor of neurology. Dr. Albers received his medical degree from the University of Michigan and competed his neurology training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He began his academic career at the Medical College of Wisconsin Michigan, after which he returned to Michigan as the founding director of the Neuromuscular Program and director of the Electromyography Laboratory, a position he held for more than 25 years.

Dr. Albers’ clinical interests involving neuromuscular disorders include myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating neuropathy and other immune-mediated disorders, and at Michigan he pioneered the use of therapeutic plasma exchange to treat these conditions. As part of his research activities, he has received funding from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the National Institutes of Health, Public Health Service and private industry to study the effects of a variety of substances, including medications, solvents, metals, and pesticides, on the nervous system.

He currently is the national neurology consultant for the NIH-sponsored Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications Study (EDIC) evaluating the cumulative neurotoxicity of diabetes on the nervous system.

Dr. Albers has published more than 140 peer-reviewed articles and authored two books on clinical neurotoxicology. He is a dedicated teacher who twice received his department’s resident teaching award. In addition, he was the recipient of the 2002 American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine Distinguished Physician Award for recognition of his educational service.
