Ensure Competence - Inspire Excellence: A New Model for Medical Training

If given the choice, would you rather be assured that your physician had studied the material in Medical School – or learned it? That your doctor had put in the time – or could apply the knowledge?

The answers are obvious, yet medical education remains a “faith-based” curriculum in which we trust that given enough time in coursework and clerkship, we will graduate a competent professional. We can do better.

We have the ability to incorporate the best educational practices into our curriculum to ensure that competency – not time – is the most valued measure of a student’s success. Competency can – and must -- be assessed.

Wants a dual degree -- perhaps in business, public health or some other field.

In addition, technology has advanced, but teaching approaches – for the most part – have not. We continue to have a “one size fits all” method of teaching when technologically we can accommodate a vastly different model that extends our reach and tailors our curriculum to meet the changing requirements of the top students we wish to attract.

We need to turn education on its head. Rather than relying on what we’ve taught in the past, we need to perform “reverse engineering” on our curriculum and focus first on what outcomes we want to achieve – then we must design experiences for students that will allow them to attain the results we want.

The U-M Medical School, historically a national leader in medical education, is once again acting as innovator in the field with an initiative to revamp the curriculum to meet the needs of tomorrow’s patients and students. Learn more about the curriculum after next initiative – including the Michigan 9 Competency Domains and how we need you to get involved – through this Web site.
