Dr. Markel was quoted recently in The Atlantic. The article, "Is the Vaccine Necessary," asks whether flu vaccinations really do dramatically reduce mortality. Dr. Markel commented on the value of social distancing, such as quarantine and school closures, as an effective means for slowing the spread of flu. (November 2009)

In a Web article posted by MedPage Today, Dr. Markel commented on a new study that found an association between in utero exposure to the 1918 influenza and subsequent heart disease. Dr. Markel pointed out that there was no definitive proof of cause and effect. (September 30)
