Student Life: Research
The University of Michigan is one of the premier institutions for research in the country, with more than $245 million dollars in funding from the National Institutes of Health. The proximity and close relationship between the University Hospitals, the Medical School and main campus have fostered opportunities for collaboration between clinicians, scientists and academicians for more than 100 years.
As a major academic medical center with a strong mission to train academic physicians for the future, we do expect that our students will encounter research projects at some point in their fours years with us. But there is great flexibility in the time devoted and the type of research conducted.
Through our Summer Biomedical Research Program, students have the opportunity after their M1 year to work with some of the brightest scientists in the country, and are supported by a stipend during their experience.
Through research, students can discover the right mentor and the right field for their future career. More than half of all Michigan medical students spend the summer after their first year as members of a basic or clinical research team. You will be able to link with established investigators who welcome all students and with whom virtually any interest can be accommodated.
Research can be a stepping stone toward the next phase of your life and will become critical in setting yourself apart when it comes time to apply for residency. The Office of Student Programs (OSP) is prepared to help you find the research opportunity that is just right for you and your career goals. From year-long, on-campus training to placement in national programs and internships, OSP will help you connect with your project of choice.
