Student Life: Community Service

ImageExperience is the best teacher, and community service is a great way to get it. We highly valued the spirit of giving back, and we make room for our students to do so during all four years of their medical school training.

Ann Arbor is a socially conscious city and offers plenty of venues in which to serve. Students get involved by volunteering in free clinics, fundraising activities, and working with the underserved. You will not only find this work to be rewarding in making you a better person and a better doctor, but it is also an ideal way to meet others, learn more about your field and start building a network.

Here are some of the ways you can get involved:

Hope Clinic provides consultations, lab work and medications to local residents without health insurance. Students work with doctors, nurses and pharmacists as part of a medical team.

Galens Medical Society has been a U-M Medical School tradition since 1914. Students and faculty work together for underprivileged children in the area. Activities include fundraising and the annual “smoker”, a tongue-in-cheek amateur musical production.

American Medical Women’s Association members work as leaders, advocates and educators to create a community for women as medical practitioners and as healthcare recipients. Annual events include Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a charity bash and the Pre-Med Mentorship Program.
