Curriculum: Facilities
The University of Michigan Medical School is a special kind of public institution with a national perspective and an international mission. Patients come to the University of Michigan Health System from all over the world for treatment. Clinicians and scientists practice leading health care and conduct breakthrough biomedical research with state-of-the-art equipment, enhancing our reputation as a premium healthcare institution.
Medical students have full access to the Medical School campus and greater Health System, in addition to all of the top-ranked schools throughout the rest of the University. You can choose to take electives or even pursue a dual degree at one of the other leading graduate schools, like public health, law and business.
One exciting aspect of studying medicine at a large institution like Michigan is that there is always something new in development, under construction or recently opened when it comes to facilities. The medical campus is undergoing major transformations to accommodate the current and future needs of medical care, education and research within the Health System.

Facilities Facts- The Medical School and three University hospitals encompassing 30 buildings over 84 acres, make up the University of Michigan Medical Center. It is one of the largest single site medical centers in the world.
- The Taubman Medical Library is one of the largest medical libraries in the United States with thousands of journal and book titles, and a computerized catalog system. A network of databases provides access to materials outside of the University of Michigan system, too.
- The University of Michigan Library is the sixth largest in the country, and its digital collection of roughly 22,000 volumes also is one of the most ambitious in the country. In 2004, the University and Google formed a partnership where the search engine company will digitally scan and make searchable virtually the entire collection of the library. This kind of access will transform the way faculty, as well as students, carry out research.
- Nearly 40,000 patients are admitted to Michigan's highly ranked University Hospital, C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Women's Hospital every year.
- Thousands more are served via Emergency Services, the Cancer and Geriatrics centers, the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center, the A. Alfred Taubman Health Care Center and its 120 outpatient clinics, and numerous off-site specialty and primary care centers.
