Career Pathways: Resources

Planning for the future is an obvious factor in deciding to apply to medical school. While a decision about which specialty you will pursue does not need to be made until the middle of the third year, students at Michigan are encouraged from the very beginning to explore all of their interests to uncover the best career fit.

"Michigan has a well-developed and time-tested program designed to assist students in their choice of career specialty. Early exposure to a variety of fields is the goal of the noon-time Career Seminar Series, as well as the "shadowing experiences" provided in the 1st- and 2nd-year curriculum. Counseling is available throughout the four years to assist students in selecting a residency program in a field that is most likely to assure them a happy and fulfilling medical career."

-- James Peggs, M.D.
Professor of Family Medicine
Assistant Dean for Student Programs

Our Office of Student Programs plans and prepares a variety of career resource options to assist you every step of the way:

Career Development Counseling Appointment – During the first half of the M1 year, students set up a half-hour career counseling appointment with the counselor who is assigned to their class.

Career Seminars – M1 and M2 students are invited to attend one-hour luncheon sessions to introduce a variety of medical disciplines.

Mentoring and Shadowing Experiences – As a valuable part of career exploration, students can shadow a physician to get a sense of a "typical day" in a specialty, or seek out a physician as a mentor in a certain field.

Career Development Sessions – The Office of Student Programs sponsors a series of informal sessions for M1 and M2 students that explore common general areas of interest in career planning.

More career resource options are available as you progress through the M3 and M4 years:
