As the Associate Dean for Diversity and Career Development, David Gordon oversees efforts to promote diversity within our Medical School. These efforts particularly focus on faculty and medical student recruitment and development, and on creating a new Minority Health Research Program for the Medical School. Dr. Gordon also works with our pipeline programs to encourage high school and undergraduate minorities towards the health professions. He also assists the Associate Deans for Faculty Affairs (Dr. David Bloom) and Student Programs (Dr. Rachel Glick) in general issues pertaining to faculty and students.
Dr. Gordon received a B.A. in Chemistry from Amherst College and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School. While at Harvard, he completed a vascular biology research fellowship with Dr. Karnovsky. Dr. Gordon went on to complete an internal medicine internship at the University of Massachusetts (Worcester, MA), before training in anatomic pathology at the University of Washington in Seattle. He later joined the faculty at the University of Washington as a human diagnostic and experimental cardiovascular pathologist.
Dr. Gordon was recruited to the University of Michigan in 1991. His clinical interests were in the areas of human atherosclerosis biology and gene therapy for vascular diseases. He also served as an Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs for the Medical School. From 1997 to 2001, Dr. Gordon worked with Pfizer Cardiovascular Therapeutics' pre-clinical division where his group did further work on gene therapy for therapeutic angiogenesis. In March 2001, Dr. Gordon returned to the University of Michigan Medical School to serve as Assistant Dean for Diversity and Career Development and professor of pathology. On April 1, 2004, Dr. Gordon was promoted to Associate Dean for Diversity and Career Development and continuing to serve as professor of pathology.
