University of Michigan Medical School
Medical School's response to Proposal 2
The mission of the University of Michigan Medical School is to educate students, physicians and biomedical scholars, and to provide a spectrum of comprehensive knowledge, research, patient care and service of the highest quality to the people of the State of Michigan and beyond.
Our strength as a Medical School and our ability to accomplish this mission are based on the talents of the diverse individuals who comprise the faculty, staff and student body. We value each person's differences in educational backgrounds, professional and life experiences, personal interests and perspectives for the richness and breadth they contribute to our shared missions of learning, research, clinical care and service.
Clearly, our students are integral members of our campus community. The Medical School has a longstanding commitment to an admission process predicated on identifying and admitting students who are well-prepared to earn a biomedical degree at the University of Michigan and who will make meaningful contributions as physicians and scientists. To do so, we evaluate the unique characteristics that each individual brings to the educational environment of this institution.
The recent passage of Proposal 2 does not change our longstanding commitment to promoting diversity, which recognizes the value of the passionate dedication our applicants demonstrate to their communities, their research, their activities, their talents, and their academic accomplishments. Clear and incontrovertible evidence shows that the diversity we endorse enhances the educational experience for our students. Maintaining our academic excellence while producing the finest physicians and scientists in the world remains our goal.
The University of Michigan Medical School remains committed to diversity among our faculty, students and staff. In concert with our research on health disparities, it remains a foundation of our commitment to improve the health of minority and disadvantaged populations in this nation.
