About Us
Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center (MDRTC):
The MDRTC's mission is to serve as a key component of the overall National Institutes of Health approach to improve the health of Americans with diabetes and related endocrine and metabolic disorders. The MDRTC supports cutting-edge basic and clinical research related to the etiology and complications of diabetes in order to generate knowledge that can be translated into novel prevention and treatment strategies. The MDRTC provides funding for core laboratories to support biomedical and translational research, patient and physician education activities, and pilot and feasibility grants to support new investigators and novel ideas.
To accomplish this mission, the MDRTC:
- Creates an environment that supports important and innovative research
- Raises awareness and interest in diabetes research and clinical care at the University of Michigan and locally, regionally and nationally
- Enhances diabetes education and training opportunities for patients, students, scientists and clinicians
- Attracts and retains new and young investigators
- Provides core services that leverage funding and unique expertise
- Fosters interdisciplinary collaborations, especially in emerging areas of research, to catalyze new ideas and scientific approaches
- Promotes the translation of scientific discoveries from bench to bedside to community
Michigan Center for Diabetes Translational Research (MCDTR):
The specific aims of the MCDTR are to:
- Raise awareness of, and interest in, type 2 translational research in diabetes and related conditions and create an environment that supports such research
- Identify, develop, and support researchers engaged in research to translate interventions with proven efficacy into real world health care settings, communities, and populations at risk
- Administer cores that provide services critical to type 2 translational research in diabetes for new and established investigators
- Foster interdisciplinary collaborations to advance type 2 translational research in diabetes
- Provide education and training opportunities in diabetes translational research
- Administer a Pilot and Feasibility Study Grants Program to attract new investigators and enable them to generate preliminary data for successful grant applications
