Evaluation of Surgical Candidates
At Michigan, we have developed a rigorous evaluation process to insure the safety of our movement disorder patients and the efficacy of our neurosurgical procedures. Candidates for movement disorder surgery are carefully selected. At the start of the process, our neurosurgeons work in concert with neurologists in the Movement Disorders Clinic and referring physicians to insure that all patients receive optimal medical therapy prior to consideration for surgical intervention.
Our experience and the latest research suggest that some movement disorder patients benefit more from surgery than others. Candidates are therefore carefully examined for the changes in thinking, memory and speech, which often accompany these disease processes. Our patients also are examined though a novel and unique MRI imaging protocol on our high-resolution 3 Tesla MRI machine, which directly visualizes the brain regions that are targeted during the surgery in the finest detail.
