Returning Soiled Items

Once unit personnel are done using reusable items from Central Sterile Processing Department, they are to rinse off all gross contamination and then place the items in the soiled instrument return totes in each soiled utility room.  Disposable sharps such as knife blades and needles (make certain needles are disposable) should be discarded in a sharps container.  The totes are filled with an instrument soaking solution. Instrument totes are exchanged by Central Sterile Processing Department personnel on a scheduled basis.

Under no circumstances should reusable instruments from
Central Sterile Processing Department be discarded in the trash or sharps containers unless they are dull or broken.
