Reprocessing Unit Owned Supplies

Departments occasionally have unit owned items for reprocessing.  These items can be reprocessed by Central Sterile Supply provided the department has written reprocessing protocols (based on the item's manufacturer guidelines) which have been approved by the Infection Control Committee.  Disposable products designed and designated by the manufacturer for sterile single patient use shall not be reused/reprocessed.  Items for reprocessing must first be thoroughly cleaned and dried.  It is not possible to sterilize an item which is first not clean.  Further, droplets of water react with the sterilizing agents, thereby preventing sterilization. Items should then be properly packaged using wrappers or peel pouches.  Each wrapped item or peel pouch must contain an internal indicator strip.  A hospital standard requisition should be completed with department name, account number, date, quantity and description of items for sterilization and method of sterilization to be used.  The item(s) and requisition can then be dropped off in Central Sterile Processing Department (B2F406).  Please keep their designated copy of the requisition which will assist in reconciling charges for these services.  At the time of drop off, an estimate will be given of when the item will be available for pick-up.  The Manager of CSPD Julia Jackson can be contacted at 66162 or pager #32626 for assistance with sterilizing unit owned items.
