International Opportunities for Students

International opportunities abound at the Medical School for all students, M1-M4. There are opportunities for students to:

  • Partner with faculty and a small group of fellow students on the Faculty Led Summer Trips (pdf) during the M1 summer
  • Participate in 3 months of mentored international research during the M1 summer
  • Design your own international experience for the M1 summer
  • Participate in clinical electives at one of more than 15 universities around the world (see M4 student page)
  • Participate in overseas research electives
  • Conduct global health-related research with U-M faculty and their international partners while still in Ann Arbor
  • Participate in global health-related coursework and activities on campus

In the coming year UMMS is launching its first Path of Excellence, or concentration, in global health and disparities for medical students. This will allow selected students to participate in additional activities related to scholarship around health disparities and global health inequity.

Each year, we have students take a year off to pursue a Master's Degree at our School of Public Health, complete an internship at the World Health Organization, or work with an NGO in underserved regions of the world. We have also had students successfully compete for one year Fogarty International Center Clinical Research Training scholarships and other full-year programs to allow for more in-depth experiences overseas.
