Research Opportunities

• Summer Biomedical Research Program (SBRP)
Medical Scientist Training Program
• Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS)

There are numerous programs and opportunities for medical students to combine their research interests with their medical training. Follow the links below to learn more about the various opportunities and programs:

Summer Biomedical Research Program (SBRP)
The SBRP provides an important opportunity for medical students to participate in biomedical research. Options include the summer research program (usually between the M1 and M2 years) or year-long research training initiatives either here at the University of Michigan or elsewhere (including the NIH, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, or other academic medical centers either in the US or abroad).

The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) was established in 1979 to facilitate the education of superior, dedicated students in a combined M.D./Ph.D. program. The University of Michigan is home to one of only 42 such NIH-funded programs in the nation. The MSTP is designed for students with significant research experience and the potential and commitment for academic careers in basic research and clinical investigation. With 123 graduates since its inception and 83 current students, the program continues to enjoy the positive support of the faculty and administration of the graduate and medical schools.

Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS)
Graduate students entering the Program in Biomedical Science (PIBS) at the University of Michigan are offered flexibility in the choice of any of 13 participating Ph.D. programs. Entering students can immediately begin training in any of 13 participating programs, or take a course of study compatible with several programs. In the meantime, students engage in research rotations in two to four laboratories of their choice out of over 300 graduate research mentors available in the thirteen programs. PIBS has been set up so that students are not required to make final decisions until the end of their first year on which research laboratory or training program they will enter.
