Patient Care

"I think the joy, the ecstasy of taking care of patients is something unlike any other. That's why most of us went into the profession of medicine: to take care of patients and to be their doctors. " Cyril Grum, M.D., Clinical Director, Third and Fourth Years.

A highlight of the Michigan curriculum is in the area of patient care.

Student examining a patientThe bulk of patient care takes place during the clinical years (years three and four) in which students begin to assume the role and the responsibilities of physicians. However, the foundation that allows students to work with patients in the clinical years is laid down in the first two years in programs such as the Family Centered Experience (FCE), the Standardized Patient Program (SPP), and in the Clinical Foundations of Medicine (CFM) course.

Finally, in addition to the feedback and training students get on the wards and in the clinics from the faculty, a carefully designed set of exercises using simulated patients to teach professional behavior and communication skills is given to students in the third and fourth years through the SPP program.
