The processus vaginalis, a diverticulum of the peritoneal cavity, preceeds the testis into the scrotum. The gubernaculum shortens, drawing the testis into the scrotum behind (posterior to) the processus. The gubernaculum becomes the scrotal ligament, and the processus becomes the tunica vaginalis testis.
