| Coaching Program (Pilot)
What it is
Every year, the Health System sponsors a group of 10 employees to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program at the Global Institute for Leadership Development. Each sponsored group is expected to complete a project that advances leadership within the Health System. In 2003, program attendees developed a coaching program called the “Sixth Sense.” The program was designed for highly motivated Health System supervisors, coordinators and managers of specific programs or clinical areas who have demonstrated outstanding leadership potential and who display initiative, integrity, professionalism and a desire for career advancement within the institution. Coaching program clients are provided with support for making real, accelerated and measurable improvement in a focused leadership skill. Currently, this program is in its pilot phase.
How it works
Qualified applicants are invited to self-nominate, or, if you know of someone who is ideal for this program, you can nominate a colleague to be a coaching program client. The selection committee will consider nominations based on the following criteria:
- demonstrated leadership within current area of responsibility or on a project
- potential to take on more responsibility
- desire/interest to be coached
- commitment to enhance personal development
- department/institutional involvement

Mentoring
The University of Michigan Health System encourages mentoring to provide individualized support, assistance, guidance and challenge from one professional to another, regardless of where you are in your career or how long you’ve been with the Health System. The goal of mentoringis to establish and nurture a relationship that cultivates professional – and sometimes personal – development.
