The Japanese Family Health Program is staffed with the finest doctors, nurses and administrators. Michael Fetters, DirectorMichael D. Fetters, M.D., M.P.H., M.A., Director

Dr. Fetters, the founder of the Japanese Family Health Program, is a graduate of Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed his family practice residency and master’s degree in epidemiology at the University of North Carolina where he was also a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar. He completed a master’s degree in medical ethics at Michigan State University in the content areas of anthropology and philosophy. His special interests include cross-cultural research in ethics, primary care ethics and prevention. Dr. Fetters speaks English, Japanese and basic Chinese. Dr. Fetters practices the entire scope of family practice including obstetrical care, pediatric care, adult medicine, geriatrics, preventive care for all age groups, as well as health care, and minor surgery.

Masahito JimboMasahito Jimibo, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Jimbo earned his medical degree from the Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan (1985) and where he also completed his internal medicine residency (1989). He earned his Doctor of Science (Ph.D.) in and completed a fellowship in nephrology both at Keio University School of Medicine in 1993. He served his family medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. (1996) where he was also chief resident. He earned a Masters in Public Health from the University of North Carolina School of Public Health , Chapel Hill, N.C. (2000). His research interets include cancer prevention and cross-cultural medicine. His clinical interests include chronic disease management and health promotion/disease prevention.

Sahoko Hirano LittleSahoko Hirano Little, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Little earned her medical degree from Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan (1988), where she also completed her residency training in plastic and reconstructive surgery and served as chief resident (1995). She further went on to earn her Ph.D. (2005) from Keio University. Dr. Little completed additional residency training in family medicine at Southwest Oklahoma Family Medicine in Lawton, Okla. (2006) and Oakwood Annapolis Family Medicine in Wayne, Mich. (2008). Dr. Little provides obstetrical, newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult male and female, geriatric, and preventive care for all age groups.

Karl RewKarl T. Rew, M.D.

Dr. Rew earned his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego (1993). He completed his residency at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center (1996). Prior to joining the department, Dr. Rew spent ten years in private practice in San Diego, Calif. He integrates his clinical practice with teaching medical students and residents, and he actively assists the Japanese physicians and students who are building family medicine as a new specialty in Japan. Dr. Rew provides newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult male and female, geriatric, and preventive care for all age groups. He has a particular clinical interest in urgent care medicine. of our physicians.

Mariko Abe FoulkMariko Abe Foulk, LMSW, ACSW

Ms. Foulk was born in Osaka, Japan. She received B.A. from Kwansei Gakuin University and an M.S.W. from the University Of Michigan School Of Social Work. Over the last 30 years, she has worked as a psychiatric social worker and a geriatric social worker at various inpatient and outpatient settings both in the U.S. and in Japan. 

Currently, Ms. Foulk provides psychotherapy and consultation at the Japanese Family Health Program; she also provides individual and group psychotherapy, care management,  psychosocial assessment in interdisciplinary teams at Turner Geriatric Clinic at the University of Michigan Health System.  She is also involved in education and training of interns of a variety of health care disciplines.

Medical Staff

Each member of our medical staff is selected based on two criteria: 1) the quality of their credentials and 2) their ability to deliver medical care with understanding and sensitivity to our Japanese patients.

Administrative Staff

The administrative employees at the Japanese Family Health Program are trained to make your health care experience one which is comfortable, warm, and caring. For this reason, many of these employees are bilingual and are of Japanese heritage.
