August 10, 2008- Amster Lupus Butterfly Walk
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects males and females of all ages and ethnic origins. It can affect every major organ system, including the kidneys, heart, brains, lungs, and skin. Because lupus is an autoimmune disorder, the immune system, which is designed to protect against infection, mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissue and organs. Lupus can be mild or may cause serious and even life threatening complications.
Linda LeFevre and Renee MacKay have worked tirelessly since 2001 to raise money for University of Michigan Lupus research in the Rheumatology Division in the Department of Internal Medicine. Linda, a lupus patient herself, and Renee, a nurse whose sister has the disease, are dedicated not only to raising funds for research but also to provide education and awareness to other lupus patients and their families.
In August 2005, approximately 300 people participated in the annual Butterfly Walk to benefit the Herbert S. and Carol L. Amster Lupus Research Fund. "It is so heartwarming and inspiring for me to meet Lupus patients and to share my experiences with many of them. Walking together is such an emotional experience for all of us," says Linda. Since 2001, the Amster Lupus Butterfly Walk has raised over $120,000 for clinical research, education and awareness against Lupus.
This year's annual Amster Lupus Butterfly Walk is scheduled for August 10, 2008, at the Civic Center Park (on Hall Road) in Woodhaven, Michigan. For more information about lupus, the event or how to donate:
