Research programs

In the Department of Internal Medicine surged upward in the last two years. Faculty have made significant accomplishments in both clinical and bench research. Total research funding has grown 73 percent since 1998. Of this, federal funding has increased 64 percent. Research activity by the members of the Department of Internal Medicine continues to represent the major fraction of funded activity for the Medical School and for much of the University of Michigan at large. Thirty percent of the total NIH funding to the Medical School was awarded to Internal Medicine. In addition, the Department holds nine out of 40 institutional training grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health.

Research collaborations are ongoing in within the Department's twelve specialties: Allergy and Immunology, Cardiovascular Medicine, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Gastroenterology, General Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Hematology and Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Molecular Medicine and Genetics, Nephrology, Pulmonary and Critical Care and Rheumatology.
