Working Environment

Fellows duty hours and working environment

The ACGME/RRC has established explicit regulations related to Fellows duty hours and working environment. We are in complete compliance with all these restrictions and insist that our faculty and Fellows strictly observe all regulations for weekly work-hours, days-off, on-call time, rest time etc.


We discourage but do permit our Fellows to moonlight within the limits of ACGME/RRC regulations. That is, moonlighting can not occur to the level where it interferes with the ability of the Fellow to achieve the goals and objectives of the educational program.

Program evaluation tools

We ascribe to the principle of 360° evaluation of our program and all of our involved faculty and Fellows. Fellows are asked to evaluate their clinic, inpatient and research faculty mentors as well as all facets of the program at regular intervals through each year. Fellows are also evaluated by their faculty mentors and by the Program Director and Division Chief, and meet with the Program Director 4 times / year for a discussion of evaluations and general review. We recently instituted a Portfolio Review and Quality Assurance Program for our Fellows and these are monitored and supervised by the Program Director. We participate in the American College of Rheumatology in-service examination and all our Fellows take this annually.

National meetings

Fellows are provided with membership of the American College of Rheumatology and are offered the opportunity to attend the ACR annual meeting as well as one additional meeting of their choice; most choose the State-of-the-Art Clinical Symposium in Chicago. Registration, airfare and accommodation costs for these meetings are fully covered by the Program. One Fellow is asked to remain on site to provide continuity of care, and that Fellow is offered the opportunity to attend an alternate meeting of their choice at no cost.

Pharmaceutical industry interactions

We do accept financial support from the Pharmaceutical industry for our educational program but have chosen not to permit any direct contact between Pharma representatives and our Fellows. This is a controversial and difficult area with no clear appropriate boundaries and forms the basis of topics for discussion in our Core Curriculum Conference and Journal Club.

Salaries and funding

Salaries are set by the terms of a contract between the University of Michigan House Officers Association and Health System.  First year Fellows salaries are funded by the University of Michigan Health Systems Office of Graduate Medical Education and the Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Medical Center. In the second and subsequent years Fellows are funded by our NIH Training Grant, or by grants to individual Fellows or Faculty such as the ACR/REF Physician Scientist Development Award or Rheumatology Fellowship Training Award. Fellows ineligible for Training Grant support are funded from other external funding sources, by Division of Rheumatology discretionary funding and/or by Faculty mentors research funding.
