Pulmonary Function Testing

All new patients receive screening to measure pulmonary function and blood oxygen levels. After reviewing the patient's medical history and screening tests, further studies may be ordered depending on the individual patient's needs.

Physician Evaluation

A University of Michigan physician will evaluate each patient's medical history in addition to performing a complete physical examination. Patients are strongly encouraged to bring copies of any pertinent medical records, chest x-rays and CT scans with them to their first visit in order to expedite the evaluation. Further diagnostic testing and therapies will be initiated as deemed appropriate.

Nurse Evaluation and Education Packet

Patients will receive an individual education session with the nurse as needed and a tailored education packet pertaining to their disease. All patients will receive individualized instruction on inhaler usage to make sure they understand how to use their medications properly.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a program provided by a team of health-care professionals to help people cope physically, psychologically, and socially with chronic lung disease. The

University of Michigan has a pulmonary rehabilitation facility just across the street from

our Women's Respiratory Clinic. This facility provides consultation with both respiratory

therapists and physical therapists who can tailor an exercise program for each patient. We offer a uniquely supportive environment and strongly encourage women with chronic lung disease to participate. In the future we hope to provide periodic classes on topics of such as stress management and nutrition.

Coordinated Care

At the Women's Respiratory Clinic patients have full access to the University of Michigan 's state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical services, not only for lung disease but also for other conditions that may be discovered such as depression or anxiety resulting from living with chronic lung disease. If necessary, Women's Respiratory staff will refer patients for other special services including:

  • Tobacco Cessation Consultation
  • Nutrition Counseling
  • Women's Cardiovascular Clinic
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Osteoporosis Clinic
  • Sleep Medicine Clinic
  • Hypertension Clinic
  • Psychiatry Clinic
