Assisted Ventilation Clinic
The Assisted Ventilation Clinic is located in the Taubman Center. This clinic is intended to serve adult patients who use ventilatory support in the home setting (full- or part-time, invasive or noninvasive). We also see patients who are currently ventilator-independent, but may require ventilatory support in the future. The majority of our patients have neuromuscular respiratory failure or other restrictive lung diseases, but we will accept referrals for other patients requiring in-home ventilatory support.
The clinic is jointly staffed by Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. We have a respiratory therapist on-site during clinic hours, and we have established partnerships with Otolaryngology, Infectious Diseases, Social Work, Nutrition Support Services, and Speech/Language Pathology. Ideally, we will be able to coordinate care so patients can have many of their complex needs addressed in a single visit.
The AVC meets on Wednesday afternoons in the Taubman Center at the Medical Center Main Campus. We have two procedure rooms fully equipped with lift systems and hydraulic tables for safe patient transfers, as well as the necessary facilities for tracheostomy changes, endoscopic assessment of the trachea, and wound care. We also stock a variety of devices in the clinic for trials of noninvasive interfaces (masks, nasal pillows), BiPAP, Cough-Assist devices, and ventilator setting adjustments.
