Protease Inhibitors stop HIV replication by preventing the enzyme protease from cutting the virus into shorter pieces that it needs to make copies of itself in newly infected cells. New copies are still made but they are defective and not completely formed so they can't infect other cells.
Invirase (saquinavir)
Usual Dosage
3 X 200mg capsules 3 times per day*
*May be different dosing if taken with and boosted by Norvir
Must be taken on a full stomach. If taken on an empty stomach, may have no antiviral activity
Side Effects to report to your doctor immediately
- Diarrhea
- Numbness, tingling in hands, feet, mouth or lips (peripheral neuropathy)
- Nausea
Drug Interactions and Incompatibility
- Rifampin used to treat TB and Rifabutin used to treat MAC infections decreases Invirase plasma concentrations and should not be used with Invirase
- Other drugs may also interact with Invirase so be certain to tell your doctor all the medications you currently take before starting Invirase
- Should not be used with Fortovase
All of your Antiviral Medications must be taken exactly as prescribed, without skipping or altering doses. Please notify you doctor if you have any problems with these or any of your medicines. |
