Hospitals Benefit As Care Improves

The statistical results are heartening. At Michigan, as elsewhere, studies have shown that hospitalists save 10 to 15 percent of the average hospital stay. By one estimate, a hospitalist team that manages 3,000 cases per year can save its hospital more than $2 million.

Honor Roll

With strong scores in many 2010-11 specialty rankings, University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers was named once again to the Best Hospitals Honor Roll. The 16 adult and 8 pediatric specialties in which the hospital was ranked are shown below. University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers is a 849-bed general medical and surgical facility. The latest data show it has 42,820 admissions and performs 16,700 inpatient and 26,667 outpatient surgeries. Its emergency room has 76,242 visits. Located in Ann Arbor, MI, the hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission. It is also a teaching hospital.

Out of 4,852 facilities analyzed for the 2010-11 Best Hospitals rankings, only 152 were ranked in any of the 16 specialties. This hospital was one of them.
