The Department of Internal Medicine and the Division of General Medicine are an integral part of the University of Michigan’s Ambulatory Care Network. The Ambulatory Care Network includes a number of community-based University of Michigan health centers in Washtenaw, Livingston, Oakland, and Wayne counties. These practices include both primary and subspecialty care and are an important component of the University of Michigan’s commitment to providing state-of-the-art medical care in Michigan communities. All faculty in our Ambulatory Care Network are members of the Medical School.

General Medicine faculty serve not only as primary care providers in our Ambulatory Care Network, but also as teachers for both medical students and residents. Our ambulatory care faculty also serve on important Medical School, departmental, and Health System committees. While typically not engaging in their own independent research, our primary care faculty do interact with our research focused faculty and are encouraged to participate in relevant research projects. In addition, our primary care faculty have taken significant leadership roles in developing clinical practice guidelines that are used across our health system as well as referenced nationally.

As healthcare continues to evolve and the importance of primary care returns to the forefront, our primary care faculty will serve an increasingly important role. We seek in primary care General Medicine to provide the type of national leadership which characterizes our entire Health System.
