The UMHS Post-Bariatric Surgery Clinic is available to help with ongoing care for patients who have had bariatric surgery, after their surgeons’ follow-up care has ended. Research has shown that patients who have ongoing specialty care after bariatric surgery — with physicians and/or dietitians who have expertise in obesity medicine — do better in the long-term, with more successful weight loss.
The clinic also focuses on the prevention and management of metabolic complications such as metabolic bone disease (due to malabsorption of vitamin D and calcium) and hypoglycemia. Sometimes the complications arise 12 to 18 months after surgery.
The U-M is unique among follow-up programs for bariatric patients due to the close relationship between the surgeons in the UM Bariatric Surgery Program and endocrinologists who specialize in metabolism.
