MEND Fellow Vicky Hsiao wins Lilly Endocrine Scholars Award from Endocrine Society

Dr. Hsiao will study blood sugar control associated with bone marrow transplants

Victoria Hsiao, M.D., Ph.D., Clinical Lecturer of Internal Medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology & Diabetes, is the recipient of the 2009 Lilly Endocrine Scholars Award. The national award is sponsored by The Endocrine Society and supported by Eli Lilly and Company.

The one-year fellowship is awarded to perform clinical research related to pituitary disorders, bone disorders or diabetes mellitus (in vivo studies or in vitro studies with human tissue or human cell lines). Applicants must be post-doctoral fellows who have either enrolled in or completed a U.S. adult or pediatric clinical training endocrinology program. One winner is chosen each year.

Dr. Hsiao’s winning proposal is entitled "Associations Between Hyperglycemia and Bone Marrow Transplantation Outcomes." Dr. Hsiao’s mentor on the project is William H. Herman, M.D., M.P.H. To investigate the role of high blood sugar in bone marrow transplantation (BMT) outcomes, Dr. Hsiao will study 1,232 patients who received BMT at the University of Michigan Hospital. The results will be used to develop a feasibility study on the implementation of intensive insulin therapy in patients hospitalized for BMT.
