At orientation, you will learn how Interpreter Services operates, including an explanation of policies and compliance issues, and how to find your way around the Health System. You must be interviewed and screened before you can attend an orientation.

Bridging the Gap Medical Interpreter Training
Cross Cultural Health Care's Bridging the Gap is the nation's premier medical interpreter training program. At many interpreting agencies, the course is a prerequisite for employment. The Health System has entered into a license agreement with the Cross Cultural Health Care Program to provide this training here in Michigan.

Interpreter Services' training coordinator, Jane Chang Miller, is an authorized Bridging the Gap Medical Interpreter Trainer. The course is open to interpreters working both inside and outside the Health System. Aspiring medical interpreters can take Bridging the Gap for an introduction to the profession. Working interpreters can also benefit from its emphasis on technique, ethics and cultural competency.

To register, call Interpreter Services at 734-936-7021. Payment is due one week before the start of class. All participants must be screened prior to class, and must score at least 70 percent on the final exam to receive a certificate of completion.

Medical Terminology and Body Systems
This eight-week course teaches the word-building method for learning medical terminology. Students learn to recognize the meaning of a medical term by dividing the word into its three basic component parts: the prefix, root and suffix.

By knowing the meanings of common prefixes, root words and suffixes, you can easily figure out the meaning of hundreds of medical terms. In each class, you will also learn about a different body system. The class includes weekly homework, tests, and a final exam that students must pass to receive a certificate of completion.

Dates: TBA
Time: Tuesdays, from 5:30 p.m. - 8:10 p.m.
