For many of us, the world of social media, social networking and accompanying lingo is overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. Much like more conventional forms of media, social media are ways of sharing information. Unlike newspapers, television or other forms of media, social media allows you to read or view the information, interact with it and even share the information with others if you wish—all on the Web.

FacebookSocial networking, also on the Web, is kind of like going to a cocktail party. You walk into a room (join a social network), look around for people you think you might like to talk to (search for friends, colleagues, peers or family members), strike up conversations, and share information in the form of social media. Some social networks are big and have a lot of special features—like Facebook. Others are much simpler and only offer a few features—like Twitter.

Whatever the case, they are an ever-popular way of keeping individuals connected, engaged and informed about issues that matter most to them. -JS
