Chey selected as joint editor of gastroenterology journal
The American College of Gastroenterology selected William D. Chey, M.D., professor, Department of Internal Medicine, as a co-editor of The American Journal of Gastroenterology along with Paul Moayyedi, M.D., McMaster University in Ontario.
“Two talented scientists in the world of clinical gastroenterology will take over the finest clinical GI journal in the world and aim to make it better,” says ACG president Eamonn Quigley.
Chey and Moayyedi presented their vision for the Journal to the ACG Board of Trustees at its winter meeting. Their presentation focused on key objectives such as increasing the impact factor, improving the quality of the reporting of original research, encouraging the submission of translational research and enhancing the international standing of the publication.
Cancer Center names Gruber to head prevention program
The Comprehensive Cancer Center has named molecular genetics researcher and public health scientist Stephen Gruber, M.D., Ph.D., MPH, as the center’s new associate director of Cancer Prevention and Control starting May 1.
“Testing and improving the effectiveness of cancer screening and detection methods, as well as considering the impact of environment, food, lifestyle choices and other factors on the occurrence of cancer is crucial to our mission of the conquest of cancer through innovation and collaboration. Dr. Gruber is an exceptional researcher and visionary in his field, and we are thrilled that he will be stepping into this new role to lead these efforts,” says Max S. Wicha, M.D., director of the U-M Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Gruber is the H. Marvin Pollard Professor of Internal Medicine and a professor of internal medicine, human genetics and epidemiology at U-M. He currently serves as co-director of the Cancer Center’s Biomedical Prevention program, and his research is devoted to understanding the contributions of environmental and genetic risk factors to cancer susceptibility.
Kolars to be first senior associate dean for Education & Global Initiatives
Joseph C. Kolars, M.D., has been named the Medical School’s first senior associate dean for Education and Global Initiatives, effective June 1.
Kolars will serve as the medical school’s lead for the oversight and expansion of both its educational mission and its global initiatives. Says James O. Woolliscroft, M.D., the medical school’s dean and Lyle C. Roll Professor of Medicine, “In his new role, Dr. Kolars will lead our efforts to enhance the full spectrum of medical training, from undergraduate to continuing education, biomedical research education, and bring it together with global impact.”
A gastroenterologist, Kolars currently holds several positions at the Mayo Clinic, including professor of medicine, emeritus residency program director in the Department of Internal Medicine, and consultant to the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
