Payroll experts troubleshoot and educate to ensure we get paid

If you ask the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers staff why they work in health care, you’ll get a variety of answers like the desire to help others or for personal fulfillment. And, there’s the answer we’re often reluctant to talk about: We work to get paid! Staff depend on a small group most of us will probably never meet: the six members of Payroll who specialize in resolving problems to make sure we get paid accurately and on time.
Pay analysts Mary Garcia-White, Cynthia Gardner, Le’Cora Jones, Zanita Rice, Kim Wehrmeister and supervisor Amanda Louks are here every weekday to handle any timekeeping issues that arise with the 300 timekeepers across the Health System.
The Payroll team has ninja-like reflexes when it comes to recalling policies, procedures and resources. They are familiar with resources like the Standard Practice Guide so they can respond to customer inquiries regarding the “how to report time” questions they get on a daily basis.
“Your pay is your vitality. It’s our priority,” says Wehrmeister. Rice, a human resources assistant, agrees and adds, “Every day brings something new.” Because the analysts know the SPG well, they can unravel the mysteries of holiday and seasonal pay, pay for new hires, people on leave and much more.
Under the direction of Louks, the team troubleshoots problems before they occur and looks for opportunities to educate staff. When the University upgraded M-Pathways, the team noticed inconsistencies in pay and developed a three-part article to explain the new process.
Payroll provides extensive training in the workings of M-Pathways and posts important calendars and other tips on its Web site. The analysts even provide one-on-one timekeeping assistance. “We’re here as a resource for those who keep track of timekeeping in your department,” says Jones.
“We do everything to make our customer service as seamless as possible,” says Louks. - CM
"I think this is a very good article. Giving Kudos to the behind the scenes people is a wonderful way to acknowledge the work they do. I have never had any trouble with my pay check in nine years of employment at the U. This in part because of the extraordinary bosses I have been lucky enough to have. I agree though that so much of the credit goes to this team of experts this article is about that they should be touted. Thank you all for the great job you do Mary Garcia-White, Kim Wehrmeister, Amanda Louks, Cynthia Gardner, Le’Cora Jones and Zanita Rice..
