Welcome to the Graduate Program in Immunology at the University of Michigan. Immunology is an interdepartmental doctoral degree-granting program within the Horace Rackham School of Graduate Studies. Its faculty are derived from thirteen different departments from three different schools at the University of Michigan.
Applications for admission to the Immunology Ph.D. program are submitted to the Program in Biological Sciences (PIBS) in the Medical Center. Applications can be obtained through the PIBS website. PIBS accepts applications from August through December 1 each year. Newly admitted students will enter through the Program in Biological Sciences and will join the Immunology Program at the end of their first year of graduate studies. All students will work towards a Ph.D. in Immunology; students who seek a Master's degree only will not be admitted.

Student Funding
All students in good standing will receive a stipend ($28,500 in 2012-2013) and a comprehensive health insurance package. In addition, the Immunology Program, using the funds listed below, will pay all tuition and fees for the student.
Students are funded in their first two years of graduate school from a number of sources, depending on the exact interests and background of the student and availability of funds.
- The following training grants: the Immunology Training Grant from the Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, the Genetics Training Grant from the Institute of General Medical Sciences, the Cancer Biology Training Grant from the Cancer Institute, the Regenerative Science Training Grant from the NIH, the Cellular Biotechnology Training Grant from the NIH, and a host of others.
- Regents fellowships or Merit fellowships from the Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
- Funds from Vice Provost for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Medical School's offices.
- Students in their
third and subsequent years are generally supported by Research Assistantships
from their mentor's external funding or by other University sources
(for example, Rackham fellowships or Cancer Center fellowships).
- The Miller Fund
Award for Innovative Immunology Research - The Miller Fund is a philanthropically
endowed fund dedicated to support of innovative research in immunology.
This is a one-year non-renewable award. Applications must be electronically submitted by the Immunology Program trainee. Only applications from junior and senior pre-doctoral trainees in the Immunology Program who have achieved Ph.D. candidacy will be considered for this award. Deadline for application is March 30. - The Monte V. Hobbs Student Award - The Monte V. Hobbs Student Award has been established through the generous contributions of friends, family and colleagues to honor the memory of Monte V. Hobbs, a leader in research of the aging process in immunology and a pioneer in the development and implementation of the RNAse protection assay to study cytokines. Students in the Graduate Program in Immunology are eligible to appy. Two cash awards of $500 each will be given to students each year. Deadline for application is April 8.
