What is Michigan Medicine doing to prevent infections?

The Department of Infection Prevention & Epidemiology oversees the Health System's efforts to prevent and control healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in patients and workforce members. They accomplish this by collecting and analyzing data to evaluate and identify infection sources, determine methods of spread and make recommendations regarding prevention and control.

Hand Hygiene

Hand hygiene is of major importance for preventing the spread of infections. Hand hygiene includes washing with soap and water or using alcohol hand sanitizer before and after patient contacts.

Extensive educational campaigns and hand hygiene monitors have kept the rate of compliance to above 90%. Michigan Medicine has also placed alcohol hand sanitizer in patient rooms, exam rooms and many public areas to make them readily accessible to staff, patients, families and visitors.

See our Hand Hygiene page for additional information.

Quality Improvement Collaboratives

Michigan Medicine participates in state and national collaborative to implement best practices related to infection prevention. Rates for central line-associate bloodstream infections (CLABSI), catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) blood infections are better than the national benchmark.
