Andrew W. Tai, MD, PhD

Assistant Professor, Department of Internal Medicine

Clinical Interests: Liver diseases; in particular, viral hepatitis, including hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

Research Interests: My laboratory studies hepatitis C virus (HCV). HCV infects nearly 3 percent of the world's population and its complications account for the leading indications for liver transplantation worldwide. All viruses, HCV included, are parasites in that they require a host cell for their replication; in fact, HCV probably uses hundreds of human proteins to carry out its life cycle. My research focuses on characterizing the molecular mechanisms by which host (human) cofactors support the HCV life cycle. We are developing new systems to study the assembly and composition of the HCV replication complex. This may lead to new approaches to treating HCV infection that target host proteins instead of the virus directly.
