Grace L. Su, MD

Associate Professor, Department of Internal Medicine

Chief of Gastroenterology and Director of Hepatology Clinics, Veterans Affairs Ann Arbor Healthcare System

Clinical Interests: liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, alcoholic hepatitis, liver transplantation.

Research Interests: Dr. Su’s research interests have been on the role of the innate immune system in organ injury. In particular, she has been interested in the mechanisms by which endogenous lipopolysaccharides (LPS) can contribute to liver injury. Dr Su has shown that mice deficient in LPS-binding protein are protected from acetaminophen-induced liver injury. Her focus now is in investigating the mechanisms by which this protein can regulate the Kupffer cells and NK/NKT cells after liver injury. A better understanding of these mechanisms may lead to the development of therapies that will ameliorate liver injury.

In addition to understanding the basic mechanisms of liver injury, Dr. Su also has interests in developing noninvasive markers and modalities to detect fibrosis and cirrhosis.
