U-M Life Sciences OrchestraSYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT
U-M Life Sciences Orchestra

The Life Sciences Orchestra (LSO), a Gifts of Art program, was founded in the fall of 2000 by a small group of musicians and artists at the U-M Medical School and Health System. It provides performance opportunities for the many faculty, staff and students in life science disciplines at the university who have previous musical training but few opportunities to play. For its spring concert in the celebrated Hill Auditorium, the LSO will perform pieces by Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Bruch and Prokofiev. There will be a pre-concert lecture by Chelsea Gallo, the Gilbert S. Omenn, M.D. Music Director at 6:45 pm.

Harrington-Brown is a powerhouse duo comprised of Ann Arbor guitarists Michael Harrington (freelance guitarist) and Andrew Brown (Appleseed Collective). Sharing the love of Django Reinhardt, the two come together and perform repertoire of the Hot Club of France and traditional jazz and swing music from the early 20th century.

Having been part of the southeastern Michigan jazz scene for decades, these three musicians – Bob Sweet (drums), Kurt Krahnke (bass), Tad Weed (piano) – bring a wealth of experience steeped in the unique flavor of the Detroit jazz tradition. Tad Weed has performed with some of the greatest names in jazz including John Patitucci, Mundell Lowe, Carmen McCrae, Charles Lloyd and Woody Herman. Expect fresh, creative group interplay and distinctive treatments of classic and lesser known jazz standards.

Bob Sweet TrioPAPER SUCCULENT WORKSHOP

Marie Otto watch
Paper Petaler owner and paper florist, Marie Otto, will guide participants in the creation of a handmade paper flowering succulent. Using materials that are all free of charge – crepe paper, hot glue and stem wire – participants will learn the basics of handmade paper florals while enjoying a hands-on experience. A clay pot for display will also be included, free of charge. Otto is a Michigan native, based in Dearborn, who believes in the healing power of people gathering around a craft, and the happiness that comes from handmade items. CHAMBER MUSIC
U-M Life Sciences Orchestra Ensembles

Featuring U-M Life Sciences Orchestra (LSO) Concertmaster John-Michael Muller on violin, LSO members Kathleen Bergen and Ellen Guise on flute, Carl Engelke on trumpet, Angie Noble on English horn, and Téa Prokes on violin, LSO ensembles will perform works by Bach, Copland and Ewazen. The LSO, a program of Gifts of Art at Michigan Medicine, provides performance opportunities for the many faculty, staff, students, scientists, volunteers and alumni in medical, health science and life science disciplines at the university who have previous musical training but few opportunities to play. Bobby Porter and Kathryn West will provide piano accompaniment.

Mary Collins listen
Mary Collins is a young singer-songwriter born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her music weaves together graceful melodies and intricate guitar lines to create honest, emotional songs. Growing up she was heavily influenced by bluegrass and folk artists, listening to James Taylor, Nickel Creek, and Peter, Paul & Mary on every family road trip. She studied guitar with local U-M alums Theo Katzman and Chris Dupont, began writing songs and hasn’t stopped since! She is currently a senior at Huron High School, where she is involved in choir and theater.

Mae HuynhFREE DROP-IN YOGA & MEDITATION
MHealthy Instructor

In this free, drop-in beginning yoga & meditation workshop, an MHealthy instructor will teach the alignment and technique at the foundation of yoga practice. The workshop will encourage relaxation, strength, flexibility and balance with an emphasis on integrated breathing techniques in a variety of poses and postures. Three more exercise & relaxation workshops in the courtyard will be offered this summer: Zumba & Line Dancing 7/19/18, Sampler Class 8/2/18, and Tai Chi & Meditation 8/9/18. The workshops, which are open to faculty, staff and the general public, are family friendly and perfect for all fitness levels and abilities; no prior experience is required. A shaded patio is available for people to participate in chairs/wheelchairs. Rain/heat location: MCHC Auditorium, F2305.

Doug WolgatROCK, BLUES & MOTOWN
Rock Jones

The Rock Jones band has passion for their music and connection through their ties to Ann Arbor and Detroit. Larry Genoa (guitar and harmonica) and Phil Ryski (guitar) have both played professionally in the area since the 1960s. Brian Genoa (drums) is Larry’s son, so their musical connection is deep. Doug Wolgat began playing bass in 1973 and met Larry in his first band (the Fuzz Brothers) in Detroit. Ryski and Wolgat first became band mates in 2005 when Ryski joined Wolgat’s previous band, the Bluescasters. You’ll hear harmonies and up-tempo rhythm of soul-style covers from Gladys Knight to Van Morrison. Rain/heat location: University Hospital Main Lobby, Floor 1.

The MotorCity3 is a trio from Berkley, Michigan that play a variety of jazz standards and jazz/funk/pop from the 1930s to today. Each member has performed in other ensembles and groups for many years in the jazz, rock and blues genres, but it’s the jazz format where they thrive. Harmony Bones is a band of Ann Arbor folk music veterans: Laz Slomovits (of Gemini), Tom Voiles, Linda Teaman and John Lloyd (of Nutshell), Jeanne Mackey, and Eric Fithian. Their sound features rich vocal harmonies on traditional, contemporary and original songs, with an array of instruments — guitar, mandolin, flute, pennywhistle, fiddle, accordion, banjo, banjo ukulele, bass, drums and sitar. The name Harmony Bones comes from an acupuncture point that harmonizes imbalances and promotes clarity. Rain/heat location: University Hospital Main Lobby, Floor 1.

The Raisin Pickers
Raisin Pickers listen
The Raisin Pickers are a Manchester-based string band that plays rustic Appalachian, old time swing, bluegrass and Louisiana music. Carol Wells Palms is a classically trained string bass player; Mark Palms (banjo, fiddle, guitar, accordion) is a composer, player and proponent of American musical heritage; David Mosher plays mandolin, fiddle and guitar; Billy King plays guitar; and they all sing. They were the first place winner in the Appalachian Stringband Festival Non-Traditional Band Contest in West Virginia. MHealthy Farmers Market is also open in the courtyard during the concert. The All Directions band is a fixture in the southeastern Michigan music scene. The band includes original band members Mike Ager on keyboards, Pat Sorise on drums, Ralph McKee on bass, and joining them to form a powerful R&B and classic Motown sound is Shelley Catalan on vocals. Playing numerous clubs, music festivals and concerts, the band has backed up a wide spectrum of talent including Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Ben E. King & the Drifters and The Diamonds singing groups, as well as jazz legend Grady Tate. MHealthy Farmers Market is also open in the courtyard during the concert. ZumbaZUMBA & LINE DANCE
MHealthy

In this free, drop-in Zumba & Line Dance workshop, an MHealthy instructor will teach dance and aerobic movements to energetic music. The choreography incorporates hip-hop, Latinx and other dance traditions from around the world. Approximately 15 million people take weekly Zumba classes in over 200,000 locations across 180 countries. Two more exercise & relaxation workshops in the courtyard will be offered this summer: Sampler Class 8/2/18 and Tai Chi & Meditation 8/9/18. David RoofEARLY BRITISH ROCK
David Roof & Friends

David Roof’s musical goal is to capture the inspiration that comes at the roots of all types of music. Whether it’s early jazz, blues, rock-a-billy, British invasion rock, or emerging artists, there is a raw energy and authenticity to the sound that he aspires to in his playing. Roof is the bandleader for The Invasion, as well as an in-demand sideman on bass, guitar, or whatever instrument may be needed. For this show, he will be playing music of the British Invasion on guitar along with Ron Bozzi on bass and Donn Deniston on drums. MHealthy Farmers Market is also open in the courtyard during the concert. Rain/heat location: University Hospital Main Lobby, Floor 1.
