Paul VornHagenJAZZ STANDARDS
Paul VornHagen Trio
Winner of five Detroit Music Awards, Ann Arborite Paul VornHagen will present a program of choice jazz standards including composers Cole Porter, Thelonius Monk, Horace Silver, Gershwin, Jobim and Duke Ellington. VornHagen and the band have performed at all of the major jazz festivals and  nightclubs  in Michigan and have recorded five critically acclaimed CDs that have been featured on nationally syndicated radio programs. You’ll hear Paul VornHagen on saxophone, flute and vocals; Kurt Krahnke on bass; and Phil Kelly on piano.

Life Sciences OrchestraSYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT
U-M Life Sciences Orchestra
The Life Sciences Orchestra, a Gifts of Art program, was founded in the fall of 2000 by a small group of musicians and artists at the U-M Medical School and Health System to provide a performance outlet for the many faculty, staff, students, and volunteers in life science disciplines at the university who had previous musical training but few opportunities to play. For its twelfth season spring concert in the celebrated Hill Auditorium, the LSO will perform pieces by Mendelssohn, Respighi, Wagner and Beethoven.

Marlena StuderJAZZ VOCALS & PIANO
Marlena Studer Ensemble
Marlena Studer has performed professionally as a jazz vocalist throughout the US and Canada since 1995. She has worked with the finest jazz musicians in southeast Michigan to record three CDs of richly nuanced interpretations of jazz standards. Her jazz vocals have been described by reviewers as silky smooth and sizzling with sensuality. In this performance, she will be accompanied Glen Tucker, a highly acclaimed local jazz pianist who trained in the U-M Jazz Studies Program.

The Choral ConnectionVINTAGE AMERICAN POP
The Choral Connection
There’s nothing like upbeat song and dance to keep your face grinning and your toes tapping. The Choral Connection’s musical revue will entertain you with a lively set of familiar favorites and quirky gems, plus a few surprises. Directed by Carolyn Tjon Burnstein, the Choral Connection has been entertaining audiences in and around Ann Arbor since 1994. The singers/dancers are Anne Bauman, Dick Bauman, Carolyn Berge, Alene Blomquist, Carolyn Tjon Burnstein (Director), Jan Carpman, Bob Collins, Pam Gibb, Martha Guest, Jim Hall, Steve Mandell, Ken Powell, Bob Toronto, Ellen Toronto, Bill Weakley, Mary Ellen Weakley, Tim Wilson and Linda Young. The musicians are Anita Delph, piano; Eric Nyhuis, percussion; and Charlie Reischl, bass.

Suzanne SmithCELLO SOLO
Suzanne Smith
As teacher and director of the local cello program cellochan, Smith is often working with her students. However, for this concert we have an opportunity to appreciate her 30-year career as a performer. She has a Bachelors of Performance from Oberlin Conservatory and a Masters in Music from the State University of New York. Her primary teacher was the well known cellist Bernard Greenhouse, one of the original members of the Beaux Arts Trio. Smith has appeared with the Jackson and McComb Symphony Orchestras as principle cellist and she enjoyed a principle cello position while on tour with Mannheim Steamroller and Simon and Garfunkel.

People Dancing & FriendsMODERN DANCE
People Dancing & Friends
This concert features extraordinary dances performed by professional and semi-professional performing artists from the Washtenaw and Wayne County areas. Select student dancers from Wayne State University and Arts in Motion Dance & Music Studio will join People Dancing as guest dancers. The program includes choreography by the director of the program, Christina Sears-Etter, with contributions from the dancers, as well as improvisational pieces. Composer and multi-instrumentalist Ken Kozora will provide accompaniment to the dancers on some of the pieces. The performance will include poetic interludes and question and answer time with the audience.

Society for the Arts in HealthcareSociety for the Arts in Healthcare Annual Conference
Arts & Health: A Global View
This international organization, of which Gifts of Art at the U-M Health System is a founding member, hosts its 23rd annual conference for the first time in Detroit.  The conference will be held at the historic Book Cadillac, the Italian Renaissance-style hotel built by Detroit's famous Book brothers, now included in the National Register of Historic Places. The conference runs from May 2-5, and is hosted locally by the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Featuring keynote speakers Richard Florida, PhD of the Atlantic, and distinguished concert pianist and psychiatrist Richard Kogan, MD, the conference is a gathering place for hundreds of artists, medical professionals, hospital administrators and arts representatives. The Bluescasters
Come celebrate the beginning of summer and help kick-off the UMHS Summer Courtyard Concert Series with the Bluescasters! This dynamic group was formed in 2004 in Ann Arbor, Michigan by the rhythm section of Harry Rodman (percussion & vocals) and Doug Wolgat (bass & vocals). They were later joined by multi-instrumentalist Phil Ryski (guitar, piano, harp & vocals), and since then, the band has released three award nominated albums. In 2009, the group added Ann Arbor's legendary jazz guitar master, Brian Delaney, considered by many to be one of the top players in Michigan. Elements of jazz, R & B, and rock are woven into the fabric of their songs and their original material is laced with catchy hooks and fun lyrics.

Cadillac CowboysSWING 'N ROLL
Cadillac Cowboys
Beginning with Friday afternoons at Mr. Flood’s Party, Joe’s Star Lounge and the Blind Pig, and adding in countless performances since, the Cadillac Cowboys have a nearly 40-year musical history. The band plays a mix of western swing, classic country, boogie woogie and rock ‘n’ roll. The Cowboys have thrived all these years playing in local joints and shindigs. Band leader Michael Smith plays guitar; Wes Fritemeier, fiddle; Kevin Brown, guitar; Gary Munce, bass; and Hugh Huntley, drums.

Gratitude Steel BandSTEEL DRUM ISLAND INSPIRATIONS
The Gratitude Steel Band
Join in the fun with this live singing steel band and experience music from such traditions as Calypso, Merengue, Marley, Jimmy Buffett and Jimmy Cliff to name a few. The Gratitude Steel Band has been putting on educational programs in schools to enhance the mind and body of students for over 16 years, and they perform throughout the region for university commencements, festivals, international shows and fundraisers with positive vibration music, song and dance. The Gratitude Steel Band has released nine CDs of varied styles with steel drums, tablas, guitar, percussion and voice. The band of Russell family members includes Chaz, Dajhumbay, Janiela, Loretta and Coretta.

Dave SharpJAZZ
Dave Sharp & Friends
Band leader and bassist Dave Sharp leads a jazz quartet featuring original compositions and exciting jazz standards. Sharp was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan where he was exposed to and inspired by the city’s rich music heritage. While earning a degree from the University of Michigan, Sharp became deeply devoted to the study of jazz and the perfection of his art. This devotion culminated in a move to San Francisco where Dave studied jazz and music theory with legendary bassist Herbie Lewis at the New College of California. Sharp now resides in Ann Arbor, where he continues to compose, record, teach and perform. Sharp’s warm tone and driving rhythms make him a stand-out talent in the metro Detroit jazz music scene.
