Joan BelgraveDETROIT JAZZ VOCALIST
Joan Belgrave Robert Jones Sr. listen

Joan Belgrave is Detroit’s most noted jazz singer. Her musical career began at age 3 when her parents would take her to house parties and put her up on a soapbox to sing with adult singers. Belgrave has performed at historic venues like Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, Jazz Cafe at The Music Hall, Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe, Fillmore Theatre, Orchestra Hall and Detroit Opera House. She has produced seven albums – five with her late husband, legendary Jazz trumpeter, Marcus Belgrave. She has also recorded tributes to Billie Holliday, Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong. Pete Siers & Mr. BBLUES & BOOGIE-WOOGIE PIANO
Mr. B with Pete Siers Grosse Ile Quartet listen

Pianist and vocalist Mr. B., a.k.a. Mark Lincoln Braun, is a rare link to the first generation of blues and boogie-woogie pianists. Mr. B learned directly from Little Brother Montgomery, Boogie Woogie Red and Blind John Davis. He has performed coast to coast and throughout Europe, Canada, Mexico and South America. Percussionist Pete Siers has an international reputation for his intensely physical yet dynamically sensitive drumming, attention to detail, and mastery of many different styles. Big Fun TrioIRISH FIDDLE MUSIC
Big Fun Trio Jen Sygit & Sam Corbin listen

All over 6 ft. tall and full of fun, Big Fun has been playing around the Midwest since 2012, ranging from Toronto to Columbus, and many points in between. One of the best Irish fiddlers around, Marty Somberg has hosted the Sunday night Irish music session at Conor O’Neill’s pub in Ann Arbor for sixteen years. Joined by Myron Grant on vocals, guitar, harmonica and the bones; and Brad Battey on fiddle and foot percussion, this Ann Arbor based trio will play Irish fiddle music to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance Students

This performance is a part of the U-M Community Outreach Performance Series. As an engaged-learning initiative of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD), this series exists both to provide high quality cultural experiences for the surrounding community and for the educational benefit of participating students. Violinist Anita Dumar will perform Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy and a portion of the Faure Violin Sonata in A major. She will be accompanied by Cole Anderson on piano. Pianist, singer, composer and director Alvin Waddles has worked in Detroit and Ann Arbor Public Schools and in the music ministries of several churches. He has been musical director and/or pianist for The Wiz, The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, Chorus Line, West Side Story, Sophisticated Ladies and featured performer in the Detroit Music Hall's production of Ain't Misbehavin'. He performed as Crown for Bowling Green State University's production of Porgy and Bess, played “Rhapsody in Blue” with the Michigan Opera Theater Orchestra, and delighted audiences at the Detroit International Jazz Festival. The U-M Department of Dance Freshman Touring Company (FTC) has a 30-year tradition of performing in the Ann Arbor community. This 2018 season-opening performance features Chair Pillow by iconic choreographer Yvonne Rainer, restaged by Pat Catterson; Root Vegetables by U-M dance alumna Eryn Rosenthal; and works by student choreographers Michaela Esteban, Cailin Ferguson, Sheli Ruffer, Kandis Terry and Kiara Williams. San, Emly & Jacob San, Emily & Jacob listen

The trio of San, Emily & Jacob formed in 2013, but they have a long history together. San Slomovits, with his brother Laz, comprise the popular folk duo Gemini, and San’s daughter Emily Slomovits first joined them on stage when she was eight years old. Jacob Warren and Emily have known and played together since Kindergarten. Emily is an accomplished violinist and vocalist, and Jacob studies bass performance at U-M. Their beautifully blended harmonies and exciting instrumental work breathe new life into traditional and contemporary folk, jazz, classical, Broadway show tunes and more, and audiences thrill to their warmth, humor and ease on stage. On tour from Virginia, Detroit native Tracy Cowden (piano), and Alaskan-born Tabatha Easley (flute), will present Pulse: Enchantments in Movement and Nature. It features music that is inspired by movement in nature and dance traditions from around the world, including South America and Australia. Promoting the work of living composers, they perform internationally featuring women composers for flute and piano; bi-culturalism (drawing on a second culture for inspiration) in American flute repertoire; and the music of Australian and New Zealand composers Carl Vine, Ross Edwards and Gareth Farr. CHAMBER MUSIC
U-M Life Sciences Orchestra Ensembles

Comprised of players from the U-M Life Sciences Orchestra (LSO), this concert features ensemble performances of pieces by Bach and Aaron Copland, highlighting the talent found within the orchestra. The LSO, a program of Gifts of Art at Michigan Medicine, provides performance opportunities for the many faculty, staff, students, scientists, volunteers and alumni in medical, health science and life science disciplines at the university who have previous musical training but few opportunities to play. This season the orchestra is led by Chelsea Gallo, the Gilbert S.
