Marion HaydenJAZZ FOR WOMEN'S HISTORY, "I SELL THE SHADOW"
Marion Hayden Trio Marion Hayden listen
Born in Detroit, Marion Hayden is one of the nation’s finest proponents of the acoustic bass. Hayden was mentored by master trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, began performing at the age of 15, and now is on faculty in the Department of Jazz Studies at U-M. For this concert, Hayden presents original compositions and selected repertoire in response to "I Sell the Shadow to Support the Substance," a quote from former slave, abolitionist and womanist Sojourner Truth. Sojourner Truth sold photographs of herself to raise funds for her abolitionist activities. Hayden will present musical reflections on the themes of self-identity, self-imagery and womanhood.

Under the direction of Ben Cohen, a smaller version of VAE will perform an eclectic selection of classical, musical theater and jazz music – with songs about gossip, chatter, conspiracy and dirt dishing! John LatiniSINGER/SONGWRITER
John Latini
John Latini is a musical chameleon. Whether he’s singing an old standard from the jazz era of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, belting out the blues, or quoting from the classic rock repertoire, his voice and music transforms with the song, carrying audiences away with him. Latini is also an award-winning songwriter, so you’re bound to hear his clever lyrics in one or two of his original tunes. Always upbeat and animated, his magic draws all ages into the show.
