The Bluescasters
Come celebrate the beginning of summer and help kick-off the UMHS Summer Courtyard Concert Series with the Bluescasters! This dynamic group was formed in 2004 in Ann Arbor, Michigan by the rhythm section of Harry Rodman (percussion & vocals) and Doug Wolgat (bass & vocals). They were later joined by multi-instrumentalist Phil Ryski (guitar, piano, harp & vocals), and since then, the band has released three award nominated albums. In 2009, the group added Ann Arbor's legendary jazz guitar master, Brian Delaney, considered by many to be one of the top players in Michigan. Elements of jazz, R & B, and rock are woven into the fabric of their songs and their original material is laced with catchy hooks and fun lyrics.

SWING 'N ROLL
Cadillac Cowboys
Beginning with Friday afternoons at Mr. Flood’s Party, Joe’s Star Lounge and the Blind Pig, and adding in countless performances since, the Cadillac Cowboys have a nearly 40-year musical history. The band plays a mix of western swing, classic country, boogie woogie and rock ‘n’ roll. The Cowboys have thrived all these years playing in local joints and shindigs. Band leader Michael Smith plays guitar; Wes Fritemeier, fiddle; Kevin Brown, guitar; Gary Munce, bass; and Hugh Huntley, drums.

STEEL DRUM ISLAND INSPIRATIONS
The Gratitude Steel Band
Join in the fun with this live singing steel band and experience music from such traditions as Calypso, Merengue, Marley, Jimmy Buffett and Jimmy Cliff to name a few. The Gratitude Steel Band has been putting on educational programs in schools to enhance the mind and body of students for over 16 years, and they perform throughout the region for university commencements, festivals, international shows and fundraisers with positive vibration music, song and dance. The Gratitude Steel Band has released nine CDs of varied styles with steel drums, tablas, guitar, percussion and voice. The band of Russell family members includes Chaz, Dajhumbay, Janiela, Loretta and Coretta.

Dave Sharp & Friends
Band leader and bassist Dave Sharp leads a jazz quartet featuring original compositions and exciting jazz standards. Sharp was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan where he was exposed to and inspired by the city’s rich music heritage. While earning a degree from the University of Michigan, Sharp became deeply devoted to the study of jazz and the perfection of his art. This devotion culminated in a move to San Francisco where Dave studied jazz and music theory with legendary bassist Herbie Lewis at the New College of California. Sharp now resides in Ann Arbor, where he continues to compose, record, teach and perform. Sharp’s warm tone and driving rhythms make him a stand-out talent in the metro Detroit jazz music scene.

HISTORIC AMERICAN MUSIC
Dodworth Saxhorn Band
Presenting a program entitled, "Songs That Made America: The American Civil War, 1861-1865,” the Dodworth Saxhorn Band performs in 19th century attire on historic period instruments. This program is a musical and educational concert with historical skits and banter, including such songs as “Dixie”, “Battle Hymn of the Republic”, “We Are Coming Father Abra'm”, “Wait for the Wagon” and the “Bonny Blue Flag”. During its 27-year history, the Dodworth Saxhorn Band has presented concerts in venues ranging from small communities to the White House, in Washington, DC.

WORLD FIDDLING SHOW
Saline Fiddlers
America's premier youth fiddling show band, the Saline Fiddlers, was founded in 1994 and continues to astound audiences every time they take the stage with their philharmonic-size wave of sound. All high school students from Saline, MI, these 34 musicians tour both regionally and internationally. They present an energetic, polished stage show that includes music, song and dance from the traditions of folk, bluegrass, mountain music, western swing, Celtic, jazz, pop, and American classics. Their repertoire, which grows every year, includes many pieces composed or arranged by an exceptionally talented artistic team, led by Artistic Director Ben Culver.

TRADITIONAL, WORLD & AVANT GARDE JAZZ
Global Jazz Project
Mark Hershberger, leader of Global Jazz Project and jazz performer and composer for over 40 years, describes the group's music as a mix of free and innovative jazz with traditional jazz roots and world music influences. They play with a unique combination of conga, sax, guitar and bass, playing jazz “inside and out." Mark Hershberger (tenor sax, soprano sax, alto sax), Jerry LeDuff (udu, surdo, percussion, ocarinas, ethnic woodwinds, cuica, congas, bongos, berimbau), Bastian Christopher Trimpe (guitar, mandolin) and Damon Warmack (bass) create the universal jazz of the Global Jazz Project. Their upcoming release, Mother Nature, is coming out in fall 2012.
