Dr. Thomas L. ClarkSNOWFLAKE MAKING WORKSHOP
Dr. Thomas L. Clark
In this annual workshop, snowflake master Dr. Thomas L. Clark, a.k.a. Doctor Snowflake, shares his paper cutting techniques, and he helps participants try their hands at some seasonal designs. There is also opportunity for participants to experiment with their own creations. An exhibition of his work, Garden of Eden & Tree of Life, is on display in the Gifts of Art gallery where the workshop will be held until Feb. 4, 2013. If attending the workshop, please bring scissors. If planning to bring a group, please call Gifts of Art at 734-936-ARTS (2787), as space is limited.

Tracy Kash Thomas
& Michele Ramo Tracy Kash Thomas listen

Armed with a bachelor’s degree from University of North Texas and a master’s degree from the Boston Conservatory, Tracy Kash Thomas is an accomplished classical and jazz flutist who is now actively songwriting, arranging and performing. She won the 2009 Detroit Music Award for Outstanding Jazz Vocalist and has been nominated for many others in recent years, including Jazz Composer, Jazz Instrumentalist and R&B Artist. Classically trained Italian guitarist and violinist Michele Ramo has been featured at numerous jazz festivals around the world, and together this duo gives a dynamic performance reaching across genres, including classical, jazz and tango.

PuzzleArtBRAIN FITNESS PUZZLEART WORKSHOP
Alli Berman
In this workshop, New York artist Alli Berman will describe and demonstrate her fun PuzzleArt™ Therapy activities. Berman had a CVA (stroke) years ago. She experimented in her studio and collaborated with behavioral optometrist Dr. Susan Fisher, neuroscientists, occupational therapists, educators and others to develop the perceptual PuzzleArt Therapy System. As participants use their eyes, fingers and brains to follow swirling, colorful paths, they are giving themselves a great brain fitness workout to develop stronger, faster cognitive function. Used in clinics, universities, therapy offices, elementary schools, rehabilitation centers, private and military hospitals throughout the US and in 15 other countries, PuzzleArt Therapy can help everyone from children with learning disabilities to soldiers returning from war with traumatic brain injuries. In the Gifts of Art gallery where the workshop will be held, an interactive exhibition of Berman’s work is on display until Feb. 4, 2013. Enjoy the uplifting, exciting and inspiring sounds of Edie Herrold with Red Shoes as they explore the world of jazz. You’ll hear old and new jazz, originals, and some Latin grooves. Herrold studied at the University of Miami, the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, and for the last several years at the acclaimed Jazz Camp WEST immersion program in northern California. Master guitarist Brian Delaney and exceptional percussionist Dennis Sheridan join Edie Herrold on bass for a journey of jazz inspiration.

Amy PorterMOZART, MAHLER & MORE
U-M Life Sciences Orchestra

The Life Sciences Orchestra, a Gifts of Art program, was founded in the fall of 2000 by a small group of musicians and artists at the U-M Medical School and Health System to provide a performance outlet for the many faculty, staff, students, and volunteers in life science disciplines at the university who had previous musical training but few opportunities to play. For its thirteenth season winter concert, as part of Hill Auditorium’s centennial celebration, the LSO will feature award winning flutist Amy Porter, a professor at U-M’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance who has an international performing career as well as a renowned talent for teaching. She will play Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major. The orchestra performs two free concerts per season, this being the first.

Jim VincentCLASSICAL & JAZZ PIANO
Jim Vincent
Jim Vincent studied piano from an early age. Despite going on to a career in science and education, he maintained a strong interest in classical and jazz piano performance. In the classical style, he performed numerous recitals at the Edinburgh Society of Musicians in Scotland, UK. In jazz, Vincent performed with some of Europe’s top improvisers and made appearances at major jazz festivals and BBC broadcast concerts. Professor Emeritus of Environmental Health Sciences at U-M, Vincent is an Associate Member of the American Matthay Association, named after the great English piano pedagogue of the 1930s who is in Vincent’s musical lineage.

U-M Doctoral Strings Students
For 125 years, the University of Michigan School of Music has provided the finest education and experience in the performing arts. Now renamed the School of Music, Theatre and Dance, it continues to attract some of the nation’s top students. This concert features music by students in the Doctorate of Musical Arts program. Sarah Jones (violin), Justyna Grudzinska (double bass) and Elizabeth Soukup (double bass) will play works by Telemann, Stein and Bach.

David Joseph as ElvisLOVE SONGS BY ELVIS (IMPERSONATOR)
David Joseph

David Joseph has worked for the U-M Health System for the better part of 30 years, and he has been involved with music for 50. In his career as Elvis, he has performed at American Legions, Elks Lodges and Veterans of Foreign Wars gatherings in the greater Detroit region and most recently at U-M Health System’s Employee Appreciation Days. For this concert, David Joseph will perform romantic songs as Elvis.

Alvin WaddlesDETROIT ORIGINAL – PIANO JAZZ & VOCALS
Alvin Waddles

Pianist, singer, composer, director, Alvin Waddles has worked in Detroit and Ann Arbor Public Schools and in the music ministries of several churches. He has been musical director and/or pianist for The Wiz, The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, Chorus Line, West Side Story, Sophisticated Ladies and featured performer in the Detroit Music Hall's production of Ain't Misbehavin'. He performed as Crown for Bowling Green State University's production of Porgy and Bess and played “Rhapsody in Blue” with the Michigan Opera Theater Orchestra. Mr. Waddles has delighted Detroit music lovers at the Detroit International Jazz Festival and the Detroit Festival of the Arts.

Iridescent Flute Trio
The Iridescent Flute Trio is a newly formed group of classically trained flutists who enjoy playing for the community. All with degrees in music, Hayley Boyse, Kelsi Gautz and Melisssa-Kay Grey will perform pieces by Kuhlau, Clarke and more.
