SINGER/SONGWRITER
John Latini

An Ypsilanti resident, John Latini is a musical chameleon.  Whether he’s singing one of the old standards from the jazz era of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, belting out the blues, or quoting from the classic rock repertoire, his voice and music transforms with the song, carrying audiences away with him.  Latini is also an award-winning songwriter, so you’re bound to hear his clever lyrics in one or two of his original tunes.  Always upbeat and animated, his performances are interactive, and he gives the audience plenty of ways to participate.  Drawing you into the show, his magic extends from children to senior citizens.

FREE MAKE-A-TILE WORKSHOP
Motawi Tileworks
This hands-on tile making workshop is one you will not want to miss!  Karim Motawi, U-M alum and co-creator of Motawi Tileworks, is our featured artist for this special event.  First Karim will demonstrate and discuss Motawi Tileworks’ tile making process, and then workshop participants can imprint a tile of their own on a drop in basis between 12:30-1:30 pm.  The hands-on part of the workshop is limited to the first 75 attendees; there is no pre-registration required, and participation will occur on a first come, first serve basis.  Tiles will be glazed at the Motawi studio and then brought back for pick up.  Motawi Tileworks, Ann Arbor’s own nationally known art tile studio, is offering this workshop completely free of charge.  UMHS has eight Motawi tile murals in the east and west Patient Elevator lobbies on floors 1, 2, 3 & 4, and more are in process.  The Taubman Center North Gallery is currently exhibiting newly released  Motawi tiles.

ACOUSTIC MODERN CELTIC
String Cheese
String Cheese is a high-energy Celtic duo composed of Ali Haraburda on cello from Western Michigan University and Diana Ladio on fiddle from Syracuse University.  Both trained in musical performance from their respective universities, they compose and perform feel-good Celtic rock on violin and cello.  Educationally, they are focused on introducing alternative styles, particularly Celtic music, to high school and middle school string programs throughout Michigan and beyond.  Their fusion of traditional melodies and rock-influenced rhythms puts a young, fresh spin on one of music’s oldest genres.

CELLO MUSIC
Suzanne Smith
As teacher and director of the local cello program cellochan, Smith is often working with her students.  However, with this concert we have an opportunity to appreciate her 30-year career as a performer.  She has a Bachelors of Performance from Oberlin Conservatory and a Masters in Music from the State University of New York.  Her primary teacher was the well known cellist Bernard Greenhouse, one of the original members of the Beaux Arts Trio.  Smith has appeared with the Jackson and McComb Symphony Orchestras as principle cellist and she enjoyed a principle cello position while on tour with Mannheim Steamroller and Simon and Garfunkel.
