JAZZ ENSEMBLE
Community High School Advanced III Jazz Ensemble

The Community High School Advanced III Jazz ensemble, directed by Michael Grace, has a distinguished and rewarding history.  They win or take top honors in most every competitive festival and event in which they participate, and they perform internationally every year.  In the fall of 2007, they were invited as special musical guests to Hikone, Japan, our sister city, to participate in the 400th anniversary of the Hikone Castle, one of the four national treatures of Japan.

A Special Week of Performances by Guests from the University Musical Society, Celebrating its 129th Season this Year

As a part of a week long program celebrating the partnership between Gifts of Art and UMS as well as highlighting UMS’s mission of connecting audiences with performing artists from around the world in uncommon and engaging experiences, Gifts of Art of the University of Michigan Health System is offering daily performances by special guests from the UMS Performing Art Series at U-M Hospitals and Health Care Centers.

CLASSICAL & JAZZ CLARINET MUSIC by Derek Bermel

Composer and clarinetist Derek Bermel earned his DMA from the U-M School of Music in 1997, and he is the winner of the 2007 Paul Boylan Award.  Bermel comes from New York City, where he is composer-in-residence of the American Composers Orchestra.  He has just recently composed a new piece of music, co-commissioned by UMS, for the Guarneri Quartet.

ACOUSTIC MUSIC
Neutral Zone Performers
The Neutral Zone is a diverse, youth-driven teen center dedicated to promoting personal growth through artistic expression, community leadership and the exchange of ideas.  Programs at the NZ include areas of: music, visual art, educational support, leadership, literary art and chillin’.  Some of the Neutral Zone’s musical performing artists will visit UMHS for this performance.

CHINESE PIPA MUSIC by Wu Man
Wu Man is an internationally renowned virtuoso of the pipa, a lute-like Chinese instrument whose history dates back more than 2,000 years.  Born in Hangzhou, China and now living in San Diego, she is recognized as an outstanding exponent of the traditional repertoire as well as a leading interpreter of contemporary pipa music by today’s most prominent composers, including Bright Sheng, Philip Glass, Lou Harrison, Tan Dun, Chen Yi, and others. Wu Man is also a frequent participant in Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project.

MUSICAL THEATRE
by U-M Department of Musical Theatre Students

This comprehensive training program, now in its second decade, has a national reputation among professional agents, casting directors, and producers as being among the best of its kind.  Students in musical theatre, as part of their curriculum, study with faculty members in the departments of Theatre and Drama, Voice, Dance, and Musical Theatre. The University of Michigan is one of a select number of schools which promote this degree of collaboration among areas within the performing arts.

CLASSICAL PIANO & VOICE
Jennifer Hartley & Gjergji Gaqi
U-M School of Music Performance Outreach Program
Jen Hartley is a senior vocal performance major at the University of Michigan. She was a member of the University of Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society for two years and appeared in the chorus The Sorcerer, Mikado, and Patience. Gjergji Gaqi grew up in a family of musicians in Tirana, the capital of Albania. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2007 with a B.A. in Music from Colby College in Maine. He is currently studying under Prof. Christopher Harding for a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at the University of Michigan.

SMOOTH JAZZ
by Annette Blank

An Italian immigrant born in a small town in the region of Calabria, Annette Blank comes from a large musical family and has childhood memories of her father playing the mandolin and accordion.  Annette’s melodious upbringing led to her involvement in a rich variety of professional musical groups and theatrical productions, including performing with the Kids from Wisconsin Ensemble.  Her beautiful, inspirational sound expresses a belief that, “surrounding ourselves with uplifting and spiritually enlightening music can promote positive energy and provide us with the strength that we need in our daily lives.”
