Robert MirekHARMONY OF OPPOSITES: ALUMINUM WALL SERIES
Robert Mirek
Robert Mirek’s wall mounted aluminum works seem to levitate, but this levity is counterbalanced by bold, black outlines and internal contours. The contour lines divide the interior into organic shapes and forms evocative of torso, head, molars, webs that are animated by delicate and intricately etched patterns. The patterns engage the viewer with playful, witty, and occasionally literary references. The work creates a harmony of opposites; it’s personal but industrial, holistic but densely patterned, nimble but weighty, ambiguous yet decisive.

Campbell holds a Bachelor of Science with a minor in Fine Art. She studied art at the University of Michigan and the University of New York in Albany, and she has exhibited throughout the United States, Australia and Great Britain.

Glenn SmithEXPRESSIONS IN CLAY
Orchard Ridge Friends

This group of artists study ceramics together at the Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge campus. In this context, artists are encouraged to pursue their own creative path. This explains why their work is so different from one another. They come from varied career and academic backgrounds, yet their love of expressing themselves in clay links them together. Many of the artists’ work is exhibited in solo shows, galleries, and art fairs throughout the region. Lorraine Goldberg, Ginger Scobie, Clare Loebl, Stacie Sabady, Glenn Smith and Julian Smith are the members of the group.

Emily WatsonANATOMY IN METAL: ART JEWELRY & OBJECTS
Emily Watson

Emily Watson is a jeweler and enamelist living in Columbus, Ohio. A graduate of Oberlin College and the State University of New York at New Paltz, Watson has exhibited nationally and internationally. For some time now, the lines and shapes of the human body have been her primary source of imagery. Her interest in anatomy began with a family history full of surgeons, and her exploration of the relationship between jewelry and the physical body made this imagery especially appropriate. These objects rely on the body to be situated and experienced, while celebrating the beauty of the visceral.

Michele SappANNIE'S GIRLS: FIBER & MIXED MEDIA
Michele Sapp

Michele Sapp is a self-taught doll maker from Farmington Hills, Michigan who creates African inspired dolls from recycled bottles. Although the dolls make references to African nations, there is no direct association. Every doll is a one-of-a-kind creation dressed in colorful garb, accented with beads, shells, found objects and other natural materials. The dolls have soft, fiber-filled heads that do not have facial features so that the observer can see the inner beauty of the piece and not be distracted by outward features.

Darryl BairdA STUDY IN NATURE: GELATIN SILVER PRINTS
Darryl Baird
Darryl Baird is Associate Professor of Art at U-M Flint in graphic design and photography. This body of photographic work is a series of highly magnified plant sections offered as homage to natural life cycles and the inherent potential for beauty in mature forms. These images are a means to explore the cycles of all living things and a way to find understanding through the process. For this series, Baird used antique lenses and the now discontinued Polaroid Positive/Negative 55 film. His work is included in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Art, Museum of Fine Art in Houston, Texas and U-M Museum of Art in Ann Arbor.

Elizabeth BuseyCONNECTIONS: LINOLEUM BLOCK PRINTS
Elizabeth Busey

Elizabeth Busey has been inspired by global travel to explore the forces that shape our world – growth, pressure, erosion and decay. Through this exploration, she highlights patterns from many disparate perspectives in order to celebrate their universality in the natural world. Her work is created by printing multiple layers of ink onto cotton rag paper, where a single linoleum block is gradually reduced with each color layer. Busey is a primarily self-taught printmaker who produces her work in Bloomington, Indiana on a press made of recycled steel.
