Joanne LeonardNEWSPAPER DIARY: PHOTOGRAPHY
Joanne Leonard
For Joanne Leonard, preserving newspaper clippings is something of an urgent task since future generations may know only digital versions of these fragile pages of newspaper.  Through the juxtaposition of news images and images in books, Leonard creates a conversation in her photographs between present and past. The pictures she makes, sometimes witty, often poignant, are a form of diary; they reflect her daily observations as she reads the newspaper over morning coffee. Leonard’s work has been widely exhibited and published, including exhibition in the San Francisco Museum of Art’s Women of Photography, and publication in Janson’s History of Art, Gardner’s Art Through the Ages, and the Time-Life Library of Photography.  She is a Distinguished University Professor Emeritus at U-M.

Casey BlanchardBEHIND THE VEIL: MONOPRINT & MIXED MEDIA
Casey Blanchard

Casey Blanchard is a monoprint and mixed media artist living in Vermont. During her travels, Blanchard considers no found object too grand or insignificant for expression in the printing medium. She finds the process of monoprinting to be engaging, fluid, unpredictable and fun. It is the mysteries behind the frayed veil, the torn edge and the unspoken word that intrigue her. Blanchard hopes to wake up the viewer’s perception, encouraging in them reflection, exploration and a connection to meaning. She uses organic materials in her artwork to help draw people to their natural, healthy and whole state. Blanchard has been involved in arts in healthcare both nationally and internationally. Missy OrgeBIRDPANTS: MIXED MEDIA
Missy Orge

Missy Orge creates work that is evocative of scientific curiosities and mounted butterflies, with a humor that sneaks up and inspires a much closer look. Her current work focuses on birdpants  ̶  tiny, ornithologically correct pants that “could be for backyard visitors who are either fashion-forward or simply chilly in the Michigan winter.” She employs traditional craftwork such as quilting, embroidery and beading to produce highly detailed  ̶  and decidedly non-traditional  ̶  confections that encourage the viewer to consider the possibilities of enticing a chickadee to don a pair of slacks. Making Ann Arbor her home for more than 20 years, she spends her spare time filling bird feeders in the hope that, one day, she can talk a songbird into modeling her creations.

Kay CassillMEDITERRANEO: WATERCOLOR
Kay Cassill

Widely traveled artist Kay Cassill looks for the unusual and the most ordinary views to save in her sketchbook and camera. In her studio, the sketches and photos give rise to watercolor paintings. Whitewashed walls clinging to a cliff and expressive views of a town as seen by a view of a single walkway are details in her paintings that help viewers feel that they were there. Cassill’s postgraduate studies include the University of Iowa, the Art Student’s League in New York City and the Academe de la Grande in Chaumiere, Paris. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York among others. She maintains a studio on Cape Cod as well as in Michigan.

Marvin LipofskyPAPERWEIGHTS & STUDIO GLASS
UM-Dearborn Permanent Art Collection

The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan, and in 1982, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium, including Dominick Labino, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

Carol J. EvertBOTANICALS & STILL LIFES: WATERCOLOR PAINTINGS
Carol J. Evert
Carol J. Evert's vibrant watercolor paintings depict suspended moments of beauty and grace within our often frenetic world. Bold florals and organic elements are juxtaposed with shiny, man-made objects and repeating patterns of light and shadow to engage the viewer in a world that shifts between the two- and three-dimensional. Evert received a B.S. from Eastern Michigan University and continued her education there as a graduate student in watercolor. In addition to widely exhibiting her artwork, Evert is the leader of the Saline Painters Guild and a member of Ann Arbor Women Artists, Michigan Water Color Society, Ann Arbor Arts Alliance, and Cake Eaters of 212 Arts Center.

Bill PocetaART GLASS
Bill Poceta
Bill Poceta is one of the leading studio glass artists working today. He creates one-of-a-kind blown glass vessels that resonate with both past and present. His work is influenced by various glass and ceramic
forms found in ancient cultures including Greek, Roman and Egyptian. Being a former painter, the surface of his work becomes a painting in glass. The reference for his surface designs can be traced to the Minoan culture, 3000 B.C. Although his reference is ancient functional form, his glass vessels are modern and architectural. Poceta’s museum quality work engages the viewer with beautiful forms and surface designs that can be traced to the late Bronze Age.

Kip KriigelFROM THE WINDOW SEAT: COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY
Kip Kriigel

Kip Kriigel is an avid photographer who believes that interesting photographs can be found in everyday common places, where most people never think of photographing  ̶  places that can be seen in different light, weather conditions and time of day. His philosophy is to always carry a camera. Although his favorite subjects are nature and wildlife in his Oxford, Michigan backyard, Kriigel often travels for work. Flying more than 100,000 miles a year for over 25 years has provided him the opportunity to photograph the world from the perspective of the frequent flyer.

Karen FenwickGOURDS & BASKETS: MIXED MEDIA
Karen Fenwick

Bloomfield Hills based artist and educator Karen Fenwick incorporates nature's wonderful array of gem stones, agates, fossils, plant fibers and precious metals into her basketry and gourd art. Upon the completion of her first basket from a kit purchased at the Greenfield Village gift shop in 2003, Fenwick’s journey and passion took hold as a self-taught artist. Her attention to detail, using various carving techniques with stone inlays and pyrography (wood burning), enhances and makes each piece unique. She is continuously inspired and amazed by the things that come from the earth  ̶  nature's art.

Her work is shown in galleries, exhibits and private collections throughout the United States.
