KimBOTANICAL WATERCOLORS
Ku-mie Kim
Born and raised in Korea, Ku-mie Kim moved to the US with her family in 1985. Although she has always had a strong interest in fine art, as a child her formal art education was sporadic. In 2002, Kim serendipitously discovered the botanical art program at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois. Since her eye-opening first class, Kim has discovered the flawless design, perfect symmetry and exquisite color of tiny flowers –- they fill her with awe! She attempts to express this joy and wonder through her botanical paintings. By profession, Kim is an obstetric anesthesiologist at Loyola University Medical Center.

Tribute to GylesHORSE HAIR RAKU
Terri Lynn Schwartz

In Horse Hair Raku, Terri Lynn Schwartz combines her life-long love of horses with her passion for working in clay. Schwartz uses the tail hairs from her retired thoroughbred race horses to create the random carbon imprints on her clay pots that are typical of this ancient Native American style pottery. A self taught potter, Schwartz has an intuitive and somewhat metaphysical rapport with her clay that lends itself to, “pots with good energy.”

AdlerCIAO, ITALY: ART QUILTS
Michigan
Quilt Artists Invitational
For the 12th annual exhibit of the Michigan Quilt Artists Invitational, curators Mary Andrews and Marty Calhoun have invited a select group of Michigan fiber artists to create a small quilt exploring the past and present influences of Italy. You are invited to stroll through the gallery and enjoy the Italian city and country scenery; snapshots of carnivals, vacation, or dream destinations; round Roman arches and numerals; Latin engravings; and influencial Italians like Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo. Let out your belt and sample the food – eggplant, minestrone, pizza, spaghetti and spumoni as well as grapes and wine. One quilt artist exclaimed, “So many pasta-bilities!”

SteigerUNSEEN UNIVERSES: ACRYLIC ON CANVAS
Merrill Steiger

Merrill Steiger believes that spirit is part of our experience from which the arts, philosophy, science, magic and all religions of the world derive. Inspired by different people, places, and experiences throughout her life, Steiger strives to juxtapose the totality of the universe with the microscopic creatures that exist within it. The Unseen Universe series features organic forms, landscape imagery, and startling shifts of scale from the microscopic to the cosmic. Her strongly hued paintings suggest a journey through the inner space of one’s own consciousness. These microcosms, which represent the cosmos in its entirety, take us on a journey into the divine realities of nature, which in turn helps us tap into the essential nature of our own being.

RossNORTHERN MINNESOTA: RECENT PAINTINGS
Douglas Ross

Douglas Ross’ work changed direction dramatically following his retirement from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln where he taught sculpture and drawing for 32 years. Upon moving to Minnesota, he embarked on a series of paintings inspired by the northern landscapes, which he first learned to love as a teenager. Imagery from his youth merges with his present imagination, and now the focus of the majority of his paintings is on the trees, rocks, and water that form the dramatic landscape along the north shore of Lake Superior.

HallidaySIMPLI JESSI: HANDMADE DOLLS
Jessi Halliday

Jessi Halliday lovingly creates a modern spin on the vintage rag doll. The clothing from one of the dolls is from her father’s bell bottom jeans from the 60's! As you can imagine, each hand stitched patch has a story that goes with it. Every doll is original, hand sewn with recycled fabrics, and filled with eco stuffing. After finishing her BFA at the College for Creative studies, Halliday spends her time between designing at a local architecture firm and creating her unique dolls. Her work may be found at boutiques around the world.

PatricoloPOWER OF CHOICE: CLOTH DOLLS
Charlie Patricolo

Doll making is Charlie Patricolo’s creative expression. A hobby that began in the 1960’s became a passion and business in the 1990’s. She spent 10 years in western North Carolina connected to the John C. Campbell Folk School learning new techniques and defining her style and methods. Now in Chelsea, Michigan, Patricolo creates dolls representing loved ones in life stages. From Grammie, to Legacy, to New Mom, to Cancer Dolls, Patricolo’s work signifies the struggle and strength necessary to deal with life’s joys and challenges. She says, “Life will show through in the work of any artist who will permit the outside to have a glimpse of her own truth.”

Gieschen-ThillSTATIONARY STRUCTURES: ACRYLIC PAINTINGS
Amy Lou Gieschen-Thill
Amy Lou Gieschen-Thill has an obsession with the blue sky above.  A photo representational painter from the Upper Peninsula specializing in lighthouses and beachscapes, Gieschen-Thill and her husband and son enjoy traveling to many lakeshore communities and walking the beaches and public piers. She appreciates the strong edges of manmade forms in contrast with the fluidity of the ever changing sky and lakes, and she explores how the environment directly affects the surfaces of these structures in her paintings.

AronoffIMAGINARY SPACES: ACRYLIC PAINTINGS
Diane Aronoff

An Ann Arbor resident since 1983, Diane Aronoff has been experimenting in the medium of painting for several years. As a fine art photographer, she developed a keen eye for color and composition and enjoyed exploring the painterly qualities of the medium. The focus of her purely abstract paintings, represented in this exhibition, is on color and composition, along with an interest in design, texture and the geometry of space. Similar to some of her photographic work, these paintings convey a sense of mystery and enchantment.

HosnerBEFORE HIS EYES: PASTEL PAINTINGS
William Hosner

Based in Traverse City, Michigan, William Hosner paints solely en plein air — in the open air, where the spontaneity of life inspires his work. According to Hosner, “over a painting session, everything is moving, changing... the artist as well as the subject... Painting ‘en plein air’ lifts my spirit.” Trained in art at Wayne State University and the College for Creative Studies, Hosner left a career as a commercial illustrator to recommit himself to his passion: creating representational works of art which reflect the places and people he encounters — creating original art from life.
