Medical Procedures Unit (MPU)

The Medical Procedures Unit opened in 1991 and currently includes the following programs: Medicine Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, including colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, dilation procedures, esophageal sclerotherapy and banding, ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, YAG laser, argon plasma coagulator, liver biopsy, paracentesis, therapeutic rectal procedures, banding and Botox. Surgical gastrointestinal and thoracic endoscopy; pediatric gastrointestinal endoscopy; pulmonary bronchoscopy; cardiac biopsy and right heart catheterization; anesthesia pain services; rheumatology deep muscle biopsy and fine needle arthroscopy; gastrointestinal physiology laboratory including motility studies, H. pylori testing and others; and cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs and recovery room services.

The mission of the Medical Procedures Unit is to provide outstanding medical care and education, promote the advancement of clinical research in the field of digestive diseases, and underscore the The University if Michigan Health System as a model of excellence in clinical medicine. The Medical Procedures Unit provides Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Pediatric Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Adult Pulmonary Bronchoscopy, Transtracheal Oxygen therapy,and Cardiac Biopsy.

The Medical Procedures Unit has scheduled services Monday through Friday. Procedures are scheduled from 7:00 am through 4:00 pm and the recovery room is open until 7:00 pm. An on-call staff services the adult and pediatric gastrointestinal endoscopy service, and the pulmonary bronchoscopy service overnight and on weekends. Approximately 75% of the MPU customers are outpatients and 25% are inpatients. In excess of 14,000 procedures were completed last year.

The Medical Procedures Unit (or MPU) is located on the second level of University Hospital. From either the main entrance of the Taubman Center or any level in the patient/visitor parking structure, take the elevator to Floor 2. When you exit the elevator, enter the Taubman Center and turn to your right. Walk straight ahead to the end of the hallway and turn to your left. You will come to a set of elevators. Go through the double doorway on your right across from the elevators. This takes you into University Hospital. Turn left. Walk a short distance down the hallway and turn right just beyond the restrooms. If you come to the cashiers office or cafeteria you have gone too far. Walk straight ahead past the chapel, which will be on your right, and into the Medical Procedures Unit. The receptionist will check you in. Please be sure to have your University of Michigan Hospitals identification card with you. If you have any difficulty finding your way, please ask any Hospital employee for assistance or pick up one of the clearly-identified help phones located throughout the Medical Center.
